Immersion Heater UnitsGENERAL INFORMATION

A 100% Efficient Heat Source
All heat is generated within the fluid, providing the highest heating efficiency possible. This, combined with easy installation and accurate control, makes electric immersion heaters highly useful in many industrial heating jobs. Water solvents, plating baths and solutions are some of the many liquids commonly heated electrically with immersion heaters.

Typical Construction Features

The basic heavy-duty tubular element, with Incoloy is formed to fit tanks, vats, etc. Both ends of the element are sealed in a mounting device. All joints in the liquid are of suitable metal to resist corrosion. Power connections are normally made in a terminal box which protects terminals from splashed liquids, spillovers, etc. The terminal box is heat and corrosion resistant. A thermostat detects temperature changes in the solution and gives accurate temperature control. Uniform heat distribution leads to long element life.

Screw-PlugType

Screw-plug type heaters are screwed directly through a threaded opening in the tank wall. Heavy tank walls may be drilled and tapped if thickness is sufficient. Lighter tank walls should be equipped with suitable pipe coupling attached with proper solder or weld material, or a back nut could be provided.

Basic Types of Mounting

The three basic types of mounting represent the most common methods of getting the heat-generating portion of the heater into the material without interfering with working space either inside or outside the containing vessel. In general, the screw-plug types are used in small and medium sized containers, while the pipe flange types pack large heating capacities into larger vessels. Both types can be selected for high temperatures and pressures. For thin-wall vessels, clamp-type heaters may also be used – generally in low-pressure installations. Over the side types, with large heating capacities, permit portability, easy removal for cleaning of tanks and wide adaptability to working area within the tank.

Screwplugs

These screwplugs are available in 2¼" BSP. Our standard materials are Brass with Incoloy elements. Specials with different thread sizes and materials can be manufactured on request.

Flange Type

These through-the-side immersion heaters utilize standard pipe flangers to support high tank pressure of superheated steam, compressed gases or liquids. These are installed through a matching companion flange to the tank wall. A wide selection of flange sizes and ratings make this an excellent heater for all tanks, vats or irregularly shaped vessels. A thermostat pocket is standard on most models. The thermostat usually operates the holding coil of a power contactor. Special laminated gaskets should be used when heating at high pressure or temperatures—or when heating penetrating type liquids, air, etc.

Thermostat Controls

Integral Thermostat Fittings and protective wells for thermostat bulbs are standard on most immersion heaters. Screwless plug and flange type have the protective well installed on the flange, parallel to heating elements.

Separately-mounted thermostat

Threaded protective wells are installed by drilling and tapping tank wall to match standard threaded fittings supplied. Separate thermostat mounting enables placing sensing bulb in various positions for finesse of control.

Magnetic Contactors

When a heater load is beyond the amperage rating of a thermostat, it should be connected through a power contactor. Light a.c. loads may be controlled directly by a thermostat.
